In late 2024, the National Grange unveiled Project Sustenance. This is intended to be a ‘signature project’ for the Grange as a whole. It is a large-scale, impactful initiative that prominently represents the mission and focus of the Grange.

Encompassing Food Security, Self-sustainability and Resilience, this project encompasses many projects and ideals Granges already engage in.

Granges, since our earliest days, have tackled the issue of food insecurity from every angle. From the fight against railroad monopolies charging farmers exorbitant rates to ship food and threatening the food supply chain for millions, to common modern Grange events and projects such as low-cost community dinners, free food pantries, and community gardens, Granges are no stranger to finding innovative ways to ensure members, their neighbors, and those around the nation and world can access food. Each of these modern projects fall under the first ribbon of the Project Sustenance banner.

Examples of Grange programs that help individuals become self-sustainable include career fairs and public speaking contests or exhibitions, digital literacy training through various partnerships, sewing and handicraft classes, or programs on upcycling and reuse to reduce waste, how to collect rainwater, and hosting speakers for open forums on how to make your home more energy efficient. Each of these activities enhances individual life skills, and help individuals cultivate independence, resourcefulness, and the ability to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Many Granges host blood drives and free or low-cost clinics or wellness fairs, invite the community in for programs that encourage personal health awareness and preparedness, offer space for yoga classes, organize 5Ks and walking clubs, offer cooking classes that focus on healthy options and preparation, and much more.

On a community level, resilience is built through connection, collaboration, and preparedness. When Granges organize local events, such as potlucks, volunteer days, and wellness fairs, they are providing opportunities for people to come together, forge friendships, and build trust among neighbors. These gatherings create a sense of belonging and lay the foundation for a strong, supportive community.

I encourage all our Granges to help promote this program, as well as your Grange. It will raise your presence in your community and acknowledge the effort and value of the volunteer work your Grange performs.

Additionally, please report your events to the National Grange here, to help raise awareness nationally of our good works.
